Windy – 22 January 2012

It was really windy with a tail wind we headed on main road out to Wetherby, (with a little detour up Harewood House driveway to see what cycling was to be had there – none as it happens.) The riding did get a bit dodgy with strong side winds and sections on the flat with no pedalling but reaching 20mph – if only all cycling was this good! We made it to Wetherby intact, whilst in the cafe the sports group arrived and were not taken in with our tales of riding to Tockwith already. There weren’t many Hamm riders there and they looked like they’d had a tough ride, we left them tucking into lunch, and we headed back to Pool. The ride back was tough against the wind. The group split (unintentionally it has to be said) 1 group with me going :- not down the “big hill” but along through Kirkby Overblow, over main road, and then the Weeton way, tackling the hills. The others down the big hill, along the main road through Arthington to Pool. We were overtaken by the sports group by the main road as we waited for the breakaway party (we thought they were behind us but the SG hadn’t seen them). We rang and found they were in front on the main road so we said we’d see them at the cars. This worked well I thought -as we were nearly back at base and both groups knew the way – not so good if we were on unknown territory. I slowed up the climb through Weeton (I believe) but hard to judge with the headwind as it really does have a big effect on me as a genarally slower rider. Both groups did arrive at the cars within a minute or 2 of each other. Thanks everyone and it was good to see the SG for a quick chat at cafe.
A good ride, not as long but hard work, of 27 miles, 11.9 average (13.5 at Wetherby).
